Yes, most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves. Properties that have visible security (such as a prominent burglar alarm, security lighting and high quality doors and windows) are less likely to be subjected to intrusion from an opportunist burglar than those properties that do not have any security measures put in place at all. Bear in mind however that if you do have an old rusting alarm box on your wall, a burglar may well think that it is not in good working order. Only use good quality door and window locks manufactured by quality institutions. Ensure that both doors and windows are secured prior to leaving the premises and never leave car/house keys on a table in the hall as burglars have been known to use tools to hook your keys through the letterbox and gain entry to your home. This can often lead to the burglar stealing a vehicle along with anything else they can take from the property.
Use timer devices to switch lights on/off automatically when you go out after dark and make sure garden tools, ladders, etc are securely put away in the evening (or when they are not in use). Burglars can use this type of equipment as a means to gaining entry or gain height advantage to access upper floors.
Be aware of strangers calling at your door, they could be checking the property out before coming back again in the future. If you are suspicious of such callers inform your local Police Community Safety Officer. Take some time to consider the following question - if you were locked out of your home without your keys, as a last resort how would you get in?
And of course, if you don't already have one, be sure to install a quality Border Safeguard alarm system.
All delivered items (such as milk and newspapers) should be cancelled, and you should fit automated timers to your lights to switch lights on and off automatically. It's always advisable to get a neighbour to help keep an eye on your property. Perhaps they could help check your post, or rotate your wheelie bins if need be.
Check that your alarm (if you have one) is set correctly and is fully operational. Also check that all doors, windows and patio doors are secured properly. Another overlooked factor is to check that your property insurance is up to date should the worst happen. There's nothing worse than your home being broken into and discovering that your contents insurance is out of date or invalid.
